Imperfection

I wrote this song last fall. I know the pronunciation isn’t perfect. But that is what happens when you are trying to teach yourself nehiyawewin while living so far away from home — relying on iPhone apps, my Auntie’s Cree language children show and anything else you can get your ears on.

But I wrote it for the rivers that flow through my ancestor’s territory. For the rivers that flow through my own life history. For the rivers that are the bloodlines of the land, which are under so much strain and violence today.

I wrote the song because it was inside me to sing.
